Why? is a question which never ceases to end. It is one of those irritable questions which stubbornly clings onto every answer imaginable, like a leech difficult to separate from an arm as it happily sucks the life out of you. Even if an answer is as clear as the mid-day sun on a torturous summer’s day, there is no end; why should I pray when its my life to do as I please? God in his infinite and divine wisdom said so as we are here on this life for a test. But, why are we here for a test?.. and so on it continues. I have often found people who most celebrate the use of this question are arrogant, deeply conceited obnoxious people who either: 1) refuse to actively listen to another counter view in order to reject everything the other has to say even if it is the truth. Or, 2) see themselves as the superior person out of the two who does not need to ‘lower’ himself. Atheists are the perfect example of a group of people who fit the above mentioned! Abu Jahl and leaders of his ilk; dictators and naïve stubborn coming-of-age young radical salafist muslims who like to crave false utopia of the khilafah yet refuse to leave their girlfriends or see it as a unIslamic lifestyle ooze the same appeal and appearance of the above defining characteristics. – Always demanding a degree of respect and awe be shown to them at every turn and step.
With the above in mind such people can never be won over or penetrated into making them logical or to make them think rationally. They are set in their ways of misdirected zeal which will not slow any time soon. For some this will ultimately lead to a flase notion of glorified death in the idea of seeking martyrdom on ISIL-styled Al Qaeda inspired lone wolf terror attack. This is why this post is not intended for such people nor for those who adamantly do not wish to submit to a heir of the Prophet Sallahu alihi wasallam in the form of a rightly guided righteous Islamically grounded authentic teacher. I say to these people, dont bother reading any further, just stop and go back to your ill-advised bedroom jihadist fantasy. This post will not be use to you.
Why do I need a teacher when I have access to unlimited number of Islamic knowledge on the internet? It’s because Allah destined it and is the Prophetic practice (sunnah), simple. If you still prefer to ask, but why? Then i am afraid you too fall in the above folks and should simply stop reading now. This is not for you or anyone like you. It is for genuine people who maybe struggling to juggle their lives between the two competing ideals in their lives, deen and dunya. It is for them to see how a teacher can make one balance his life between the two. Without going into the islamic semantics of thought on the vast subject or throwing in lines of verses from the Quran or Hadith scriptures, I will simply lay logical and rational reasons I believe it is essential and go one step further to say a life-and-death issue to have an authentic Islamic spiritual teacher. Unlike other forms of teachers who also serve a purpose, like a fiqh or aqeedah teacher, the spiritual teacher fills in larger spiritual void often putting in the spirit into the body of Islamic knowledge. How? An authentic spiritual teacher from the on set will tell you to learn the correct Islamic beliefs, familiarise yourself with what you should know as well as obtaining the obligatory knowledge of fiqh. In the most simplistic way of saying it, wrap up all the Islamic nuances and practicality and present it to you as a perfect gift. Bringing not only your spiritual life back in check but dunya as well in the form of constant guidance how to tread life here on earth; how to use this life as a stepping stone to reach everlasting grace of God enriching both your life, your family’s life and your social network too! Most of all, in times of need and support you have a mountain to lean on through every stage of your difficult recovery, whether you are stuck in an overnight in a hospital or down a sewage tunnel of sin and rebellion. Although a teacher can be assertive at times in commanding the good and forbidding the evil, this only re-enforces his complete awareness of when your abilities and egoistic centric reasoning of an intended action.
Allah in his infinite grace, mercy and love allowed me to find such an individual who is not only sound to the highest degree of Islamic authenticity, knowledge and spirituality but also a stern powerful force field against anything unGodly; clearly knowing the subtleties of the ever deceitful ego and devil, by having gone through a rigorous spiritual course himself, he is a sublime trainer for anyone seeking to become an elite SAS spiritual fighting force against the ego and devil without shunning the world along the process. The bottom line is being able to have access to your teacher whenever you need guidance, support and assurances is the most fulfilling experience of all. Modern means are another tool which drives forward the link between one and his teacher. So, whether he is metaphorically, spiritually or literally in the other end of the world he still has time and ability to comfort and console you when you need it most. My beloved teacher is fittingly the superman of our age who will unconditionally see things right through to the end. Cliches are one line statements most of the time false or when used do not befit the situation. It may seem as a cliché to say my shaykh is indescribable in dignified character but ill leave that to you to decide. Come as see who he is not simply through his speeches but his life as a whole.
