In today’s edition of the Time’s newspaper, one of the most popular British newspapers with a large readership published the following ‘opinion’ piece by Mat Ridley, “Why more Muslims are turning away from Islam”. In it, Matt Ridley, the Times investigative journalist examines the reasons and puts forward his reasons why the trend is rocketing. It is mainly due the rise of Atheism being pushed onto people with a far-reaching appeal than ever before. Being able to project its appeal into once rural and most isolated regions of the world. This is being done through new scientific discoveries many of which its sole purpose is to undermine and ultimately destroy the rationality of being a believer in faith. This rejection of faith has given rise to a new generation of people who loath organised religion and seek to ridicule what they see as the cause for world chaos and insecurities. The article goes on to put forward a number of statistics which point to in this direction. “In a 2012 poll showed 5% of Saudis describe themselves as fully atheist and 19% as non-believers”.
One of the causes of this is the rise of radical Islam forcing many of the followers of the faith to question the fundamentals of the religion altogether. Seeking to distance themselves from such barbarity as the Paris attacks and the constant mention of Islam in the media, the ‘intellectually’ aware of conservative societies like Saudi Arabia now see Islam as a religion which is completely at odds with the modern advancement of societies. With the introduction of blasphemy laws and the restriction placed on people who want to voice their views on current issues liked with radical Islam it is pushing more of the young to abandon the faith together.
The state of Saudi Arabia is unsurprising given the official dogma of the state is Wahabism, a strict interpretation of Islam which suppresses everything which fails to agree with it. The definition of a moderate Islam, or real Islam is one that accepts other faiths to co-exist within its lands and it is being eroded away faster than the melting icecaps of the poles. In many parts of the Saudi Arabian society Islam is simply an accepted inconvenience and nothing more, an oddity of life which is a part of their ‘culture’; Where the observances of the faith are performed in a ritual sense devoid of any spirituality or meaning, much like Christianity has become in the western world. When the spirit of any religion is forcibly removed and a strict outward emphasis is placed then the life of any religion slowly withers away and becomes a foul-smelling corpse where people eagerly await its removal and eventual burial. Just like Judaism and Christianity has faced in the last millennia, the same is taking happening with Islam.
Authentic Sufism has played a central role in shaping the life of Muslims throughout its history and many of the rulers of the golden era of the Islamic empires were avid Sufis. This is because authentic science of Sufism teaches its adherents the spiritual aspects of its faith and how to gain a spiritual connection with Allah. See the world for what its is; an arena of reactions. How a man reacts with the creation of God in times of ease and hardship, in which the belief in God interplay’s with every reaction undertaken. Since the onslaught of the Wahabi dogma placed on the Saudi society it has sort to root out all forms of spirituality from its borders, the foul and fruitful. From the view from a traditional Muslim who adheres to its founding principles of spiritual Islam consisting of the exoteric as well as the esoteric foundation of Islam, these sorts of rise in the rejection of faith is a given appearance as we draw close to the end days. Although it sounds cliche it is still does not lose its value.
The prophet Sallahu Alihi Wasallam said:-
Near the establishment of the Hour there will be days during which (religious) knowledge will be taken away (vanish) and general ignorance will spread…(Bukhari) There will come a time for my people when there will remain nothing of the Qur’an except its outward form and nothing of Islam except its name and they will call themselves by this name even though they are the people furthest from it.(Ibn Babuya, Thawab ul-A’mal)
The Prophet Sallahu Alihi Wasallam is attributed to have said, despite the fact that the Qur’an will be read, the knowledge and wisdom it has will not be considered. This is another sign of the time of the End Times.
There will come a time upon the Ummah when people will recite the Qur’an, but it will not go further than their throats, (into their hearts).
(Bukhari) Allah’s Messenger (Sallahu alihi wasallam) spoke of something and said: “It will happen when knowledge will be no more. ” (Ziyad) said: “Allah’s Messenger, how will knowledge vanish despite the fact that we will be reciting the Qur’an and teaching its recitation to our children and our children will teach its recitation to their children up to the Day of Resurrection?” Thereupon he (the prophet Sallahu alihi wasallam) said: “Ziyad, do these Jews and Christians not recite the Torah and the Bible but not act according to what is contained in them?”(Ahmad, Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi)
It is a sign of the End Times that some Muslims will follow the example of heretical Jews and Christians and imitate them blindly. The Prophet (Sallahu alihi wasallam) said,
“Surely you will follow the ways, of those nations who were before you, span by span and cubit by cubit (i.e. inch by inch) so much so that even if they entered a hole of a lizard, you too would follow them,” We said, “O Allah’s Messenger! Do you mean the Jews and the Christians?” He replied, “Whom else?”(Bukhari)
The following hadith concludes the times we are living in and what is to follow immediately afterwards demonstrated by the ahadith above.
Before the Last Hour there will be commotions like pieces of a dark night in which a man will be a believer in the morning and an infidel in the evening, or a believer in the evening and infidel in the morning.(Abu Dawood)
The above is certainly proving true in societies like Saudi Arabia and other Islāmic dominated societies like Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE and others.
