Fake Sufism

Last nights blistering wild goose chase around Piccadilly Circus, London. Was an awkward enthralling experience. Something which will be remembered for some time to come. Le meridian Hotel, was a needle in a haystack. Our duty, to find and then interview one of the leading clerics of the tijaniyah Tareeqah. Bringing the teachings of the tijaniyah to the western, english speaking audience. What was more of an eye opener than anything else, was the totally unexpected shock we received when we entered the room to begin our work. Men, women and children were taking up every square inch of the room. As per usual in customary pseudo-Sufism, the shaykh was surrounded by the many diverse mureeds. Settled in a thrown like chair, the shaykh had his hands out for the ever growing ‘kissing’ queues. scenery which was more akin to a mafia leader with his playgirls at the side waiting for the command!

The threat to tassauwff is not only the from the externally enemies. but, pseudo-Sufism. In many respects, this is greater than any externalities. As it suffocates the real tassawuff from being allowed to voice it’s message. It suffocates it from breathing and surviving. Pseudo-Sufism teaches one to adhere to the cultural baggages of intermingling between the sexes and not give much credence to the shariyah. It is not hard to imagine why the appeal of Sufism or tassawuff, is losing attraction and the appeal on people it once had. In past centuries, tassawuff was the bedrock for instilling piety and love in people’s lives. There is nothing available for the masses to find interesting in our times.

All people see of the sham-sufism is, kissing hands, maintaining monetary relations with the “shaykh”, and growing the number of mureeds. Whilst dressing in religious clothing and holding gatherings of Dhikr, when it suites fit. This for many is the ultimate ‘Sufism’ and what sufism entitles. There is nothing more. A cult which is more concerned at maintaining numbers of followers rather than any real change. Whereas, on the flip side of the coin, the enemies of Ahlul Tassawuff have a host of measures to draw the masses to its whims and activities. Which are more upto date with the times and places. Sufism in the eyes of many has become a old and frail man. With monotonous voice trying to sing. A man who is desperately trying to come across as young and fresh.

It is a great blessing in on itself, to find the true tassawuff. Tassawuff which the past generations enjoyed. Sufism which was worn and admired proudly in public and in secret. The pseudo-Sufism is a inept attempt at trying to follow the awliyah but not by walking in their paths. But, by carving out a new path which excludes having to go through struggle and hardship. Whilst using and eating off the names of the pious forefathers to grow followers and fame.
The sign of true tassawuff is a complete reversal to what these people display. Where one will see there is no avenues which is against shariyah and more importantly sunnah. No kissing hands, free mixing, an cultic islam, or chilled life. True tassawuff is, essentially the complete sunnah. Nothing more or less. In fact the ones who are following sunnah are closer to the path of the awliyah than pseudos.

  1. “scenery which was more akin to a mafia leader with his playgirls at the side waiting for the command!”
Nice analogy. I have seen many pirs like that in Pakistan. Where they have murids who are in reality his servants.

  2. Do you blame the masses of Muslims who see this as shirk? Some people will attribute qualities of Allah to these so called Shaykhs such as knowing the unseen without the aid of Allah. Some will bow down and prostrate to them as well as give them every penny one has for the sake of dua.

Many youtube videos including the famous ‘Electric Pir’ also highlights the incorrect ideas, beliefs and practices regarding Sufism. Why call your self a Sufi in the first place? Sufism is more famous for wearing dresses and spinning to music than doing Zikr of Allah.

Rather, call yourself a Muslim who follows the Sunnah!

    1. No one calls himself a Sufi. This is a title which gets sometimes forced on people who follow the ways of the awliyah. Most of the time by the wahabis.
