Yesterdays final part of ‘The life of Muhammad’ (sallahualihiwalsalam) on BBC 2 touched on the typical, childish attack which the enemies of Islam use to demonize and portray Islam as an inhuman religion. It is the ‘age of Aisha’ (radhiallahuanha – May Allah have mercy on her) argument they used. Which would have caused some eye brows even within the Muslim community to be raised, at the thought of this. If these people think that with such stupid and irresponsible arguments they can discourage the mass conversion into Islam from taking place throughout the known world. They have another thing coming, they should know and be clear that these smear campaigns which clearly fail only serve as a point of interest for genuine people interested in Islam. Which ultimately leads them to accept the truth of the matter.
The recent Christian terrorist attacks in Norway is symbolic to the fear and stress these narrow and bigoted minded people are living in. They live in complete fear of Islam, of it dominating the world (as they claim). Hence forth have started this call for reawakening the crusade which (if they look in the history properly) would know even then their cause at destroying Islam failed miserably! Just as we had Saladin who brought the crusaders to their knees and made them loose in their pursuit of oppression. Allah will raise another Saladin who will do the same again. If this route is to be taken once more by the miserable, pathetic, Christian fundamentalists of trying to completely destroy Islam. On a side note though, i find it strange how the newspapers’, news channels’, and radios’ were not blaring and plastering the phase “Christian terrorist” all over. Which they immediately do if apparently a ‘Muslim’ seems to do such an act. why the hypocrisy? when we have Anders Behring Breivik who clearly says in his 1500 word document which he wrote up saying “…only under Christianity will Europe unite”. – something which Bill O’Reilly and co in fox news should consider before they disclaim Anders Behring Breivik as, not being a Christian terrorist. When its clear as day, he clearly is!
Anyway, i will (inshaAllah) try to show how this silly attempt by these people to tarnish the name of ‘Aisha’ (radhiallhuanha) are simply stupid for any intellectual who has a sane and fully functioning mind. Before we begin one thing which is crucial that we must do is, we have to step out of our environments/ social framework of thinking/modern-day cultural understandings only then we can begin to examine another society or culture, let alone a culture and society which was almost 1500 years ago!
You must understand this. That before we can begin to point fingers towards this or that of another society we have to understand their frameworks. In terms of culture – how they operate. Their thinking – how they applied rules and regulations on their culture and society. You see, it’s very easy for us to apply and in many circumstances force our governing rules and our dictated fashions and norms on a completely alien society. Something which is not acceptable in our day and age may in fact be completely acceptable in a foreign culture. So with these aspects in mind when it comes to the issue of Asiha (radhiallahuanha) it was the norms of that age, and completely acceptable for marriages to happen in this manner – at a young age. People matured at an earlier age, especially in rural communities like that of the Arabian deserts. You tend to find very young children at the age of 9/10 upwards having adult responsibilities. Thats why even in the western world you had children at the ages of 12/13, who were heavily involved in crusades in the early 11, 12, and the 13th centuries. A simple google search will bring up numerous accounts of child soldiers involved in the crusades. It was Islam which actually increased the child combatant to 15/16 years of age, provided they could fight and were fit and healthy. Now coming back to the topic, so it was normal for anyone marrying someone at a very early and young age. Since they were not like the 9 or 10 year olds’ or our age. Back then people were considered adults as soon as they hit puberty. It was during the renaissance we find the introduction of the adolescent age group being introduced, that being the ‘teen’ age years.
It was also accepted in other religions, take for example Mary (the virgin mother of Jesus). It is said and also documented in several authentic sources of which doing a simple goggle search brings up this fact. She was 11/12 when she gave birth to Jesus! Now tell me this is absurd and barbaric! You know, like i said before we cannot enforce our norms and customs on a foreign society and culture, and then demonize that culture for not ‘fitting in’ with our rules/customs. This is like saying we want to understand the rural, traditional Chinese cultures (which were and if it still exists are rooted in traditional Chinese culture, from the way to dress to the way you ate.) or the rural societies of the Amazon rainforests by applying our understandings and customs of culture onto their societies. From the onset it will be a failure simply because we will be prejudice towards that society. They have a complete way of thinking/understanding and a completely different set of rules and regulations which govern their society. In the same light when we or these people want to understand the issue with Aisha’s (radhiallahuanha) age and being married to the prophet we must do the same. More importantly know that back then is was a completely different world altogether. Which (the marriage) was an acceptable thing to do. As we also find in the Christian customs and traditions, with Mary giving birth to Jesus at 11/12 years of Age.
In summary, the critics can be easily be silenced when we do a trough analysis of the situation, which includes all the divinely revealed religions, that being the christian, Judaic, and Islamic traditions. We find this was the norm of those day and age. People were considered adult as soon as they hit puberty hence forth given adult responsibilities. Secondly, we should not compare the 9 year olds’ and the 12 year olds’ of our day and age with those of the past ancient cultures and societies. There is a heaven and hell difference between them.
