By now as the flames of the US election subsides and the reality dawns on people that the next US president will not be the type or of the style they anticipated, what is NOT surprising is the result. I said it from the beginning Donald trump will win the election and will do it in emphatic style. Simply because he is a man people can relate to and see as one of them, despite being a multi billionaire who used to cosy up to the elites.
This election was a reality TV show which, given his background in the American hit TV show ‘The Apprentice’ he knew exactly how to play ball. To predict the outcome of US election is simple, any celebrities who run will win as people see them on their TVs a lot and assume to know them as they see their lives played out on TV screen. Donald Trump has been on American TV for decades one way or another, whether it’s through his own TV shows, being a movie extra on in cartoons and not just appeared on TV screens 2 or 3 years before an election like the politicians do. Any politician who runs against a celebrity running for office will always lose this is feature has a proven record of turning out the winner almost every time, you line up a politician against a celebrity and the celebrity will win. Ronald Reagan, a former Hollywood actor became the US president after being the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger is also a former governor of California and of course Donald Trump now the president elect, all won overwhelming against their career politicians. All these candidates had one thing in common among them, that was their mastery over the TV set, being able to sway viewers opinions any way they saw fit. Politicians who ran against these individual were seen as snobbery, look-down-your-nose type of people who detested normal blue-collar workers and anything they have to stand for, often times living in their ivory towers only to come down during election period and then quickly run back as soon as the election is over, never to be seen among normal people again until the next election.
What WAS surprising about the election (somewhat) is the complete loathing which the Democrats received from the mass US population in general. For example, a man such as current US president, soon to be the former US president, Barack Obama who appears to be a well grounded family man free from the usual extra-material scandal is hated and despised by majority of Americans apart from the millennial generation. You would think, a man who is pro same-sex marriage, for equal rights of lesbians, gays, bisexual, trans-sexual, and queer (LGBTQ) communities (YUK!!), legalizing recreational drugs like weed (marijuana) would be overwhelming loved and admired. A man who in simple terms is open to any suggestion of legalizing the illegal would have a high approval rating but he does not. One thing this election showed is a rejection of this, of his approach and the style of ‘put your legs up and get high dude’ of govern-ship. It brings you back to the old adage ‘if you try to please everyone, you will end up pleasing no one’. In Islamic terms this is also true, they say ‘If you have more than one master it is harder to please them all as opposed to if you have one master’.
One thing is clear from the reality TV show of the US election is this, Obama and in extension the Democrats went the extra mile to try to please all, when if fact if they stuck their core principles (if they had any lol) they would have fared better in this election. In the past and present, our precious awliyah always say this, don’t try and please creation by forsaking Allah azzawajal. Just as on any ‘to-do’ list stuck on a refrigerator door or memo pad leads from one objective to another.
Please Allah and being liked by creation will automatically fall in line without requiring effort, because in pleasing Allah will mean you must also please creation. Since fulfilling the rights of creation are integral parts of fulfilling the rights of Allah azzawajal. Point being is, if you have set principles don’t try to modify, modernize, or try to appease those who don’t like them by trying to sound more compromising in an effort to win over approvals of people because at the end of the day these same people will still be upset, angry and negative towards you. Don’t believe me? Well, as students in political schools throughout the US will do for year to come, study this US election and see how right i am. At work and many other places i see many Muslims going above and beyond trying to seem as though they are normal, not of those extremist types on telly always killing, bombing and raping people in the middle-east. trying to be ‘cool’ about it, going out to clubs, bars and taking a lead in organizing Christmas dos and office parties. But underneath all this is the same thing the Democrats and in general people do, trying to please everyone so that no one gives them the eye or looks at them derogatorily.
