C4: What Brtish Muslims Really think & BBC Radio 4

t3

One major theme which came out of watching Channel 4’s documentary  ‘What British Muslims Really Think’, is the concerted effort now being made by the media and in particular Trevor Philip’s program on any Muslims who holds conservative values as being the ‘other’; A person who is towing in line with, if not is, a terrorist extremist. In short, the show ties together any Muslim who holds religious conservative values with that of a terrorist. In one part of the program Trevor Philips highlights this explicitly by commenting,

‘unlike the Hindus and Sikhs and other groups from ethnic minorities Muslims have not assimilated into British societies. They, unlike other groups, hold differing views on issues like homosexuality, sex before marriage, peace’

In other words suggesting Muslim communities need to become liberal and allow sex, clubbing, enjoying the “freedoms” of British life only when the doors of liberalism has been thrown wide open can Muslims begin to dream of being considered as “British”. It is suggestive at most and wild in some parts on claims of large groups of British Muslims justifying suicide bombing and terrorist activities based on his supposed survey of thousand Muslims being interviewed. Again, trying to draw parallels with terrorism and the average Muslim.

This is not the only program to have used this new tack to further alienate Muslims. BBC Radio 4 program ‘The Deobandis’ is another example to show the supposed ‘under belly’ of Muslim communities: how they are insular and seethe with contempt and disgust at non – muslims, how they prefer not to and in some cases completely cease to interact with non – muslims on the pretexts ‘they are filthy non – believers who will tempt them into sin and disobedience’. The radio show then goes on to interview an ex-Muslim female who used to be part of the ‘Deobandis’, being forced to attend their Madrasa, or Islamic seminaries run by the Deobandi Muslims.

She details her depraved in the sense of being denied from watching television, learning about sex in science lessons or receiving any relationship advice on how a man and a woman should behave.  The few lessons she did have, was presented through the prism of ‘religious texts’. The first of her ‘freedoms’ came when she went on to college and could relive her teenage years by having relationships, sex, partying and ultimately the final draw on her religious beliefs came in university. She chronicles her path on the road to losing her faith how one day she came across a book in the library which “screened at her” to be read.

Lo and behold! it happened to the the book written by the mouth piece of the atheist community, Dr Richard Dawkins, ‘The God delusion’. It is interesting to note the subtle message being played out here; which is, if young Muslims growing up in the UK are allowed free roam (which is to say they are not according to the program), then like the young university graduate, will ultimately choose to leave Islam and embrace the liberal, free-minded nature of supposed ‘intellectuals’. This leaves the question, why do media outlets continually and intentionally leave aside other religious conservative groups who hold the exact same values on homosexuality, sex before marriage, crime and punishment, as the Muslims and yet continually choose to focus on Muslims? Take for example the Jewish communities in the UK, many parts of West London, and in the North where there are strong Jewish communities, hold the same views on sex before marriage, homosexuality and religious values as the Muslims. And the same is true for conservative Christian communities, e.g the Amish, who are so far out there, they do not allow anyone from their communities to use technology out of the belief it is unnatural and the tool of the devil.

Where are TV documentaries and radio shows about them? Or on the ultra orthodox Jews in West London who do not allow women to drive, even in the UK. Yes in the UK?

To conclude, the means to create, innovate and in reality grow confusion within the hearts of the Muslims by the devil is not a new age fitna (tribulations) which we are only facing now. It is a set game which the devil plays with every generation of Muslims growing up in the world. In each generation he redesigns his age – old tricks and presents it to try anew in discouraging and finally causing people to leave Islam. Only, in our times as mentioned by the Prophet Sallahu alihi wasallam, the use of these age-old tricks will dramatically increase.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:”There will come a time when holding on to your Iman (belief) will be like holding on to hot coals” {Tirmidhi}

This hadith alone is very profound in that it underlines the nature of tests which will befall Muslims all across the world. Not only will they have to ready themselves to take on the challenges nearing the end of times, but these attacks will come from all angles and avenues known to man. It will become so common so much so leaving people seriously questioning their own conscience and level of sanity. This is what is happening in many parts of the world, Muslims who are weak in faith and prefer to exclude themselves from participating in any authentic spiritual gatherings or religiously uplifting lectures are ending up in questioning their faith. On Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites there are growing number of ex-Muslims professing how “free” they are now that they have left Islam and can think for themselves. When in reality they have left real “freedom” to live life free from distractions of the world and chosen to live a life in the “freedom” of their mental jail cell constantly needing to bat off their conscience and inner guilt of knowing what is right and wrong, of the natural need for a human to believe in Allah and follow righteous and noble ways.
