The Baboons’ at Rumi’s Cave, London.

In a small nondescript street in the heart of Kilburn, London, exists a tea-shop sized ‘spiritual’ center one might at first look think of it as the last remaining vestige the mid 60s sweeping hippie movement. They call is the Rumi’s Cave. What an insult to the honorary name, dragging it through the muck and then forcibly inflicting fatal blows to all the authentic teachings and decency he stood for. For centuries people have looked towards the teachings of Mawlani Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (ra) to safeguard their spiritual lives from the increasingly dangerous and chocking growth of secularization. Seeking solace from his spiritual teachings in hope of rebuilding the relationship between the servant and his lord; What is more damaging and catastrophic is to lose the life of the eternal for the moments of confusion and delusion here on earth. Although long passed into the eternal embrace of the life after death, Mawlani Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī has been at the helm of guiding people to the correct methodology of the sufiya and the ways of the people of serenity. Not only a man of the gnosis of Allah but also a poet, jurist and theologian, among many other salient qualities of the shaykh. Iranians, Turks, Afghans, Tajiks, and other Central Asian Muslims as well as the Muslims of South Asia have greatly appreciated his spiritual legacy in the past seven centuries.

The people at the ‘Rumi’s cave’ are using the honour of the great shaykh to clothe the many unIslamic and frankly speaking, hippie sing-along hold-hands type gatherings which take place there often. Using the guise of Islāmic spirituality and ecstasy of the love of God there are women in their ‘spiritualist’ gatherings who sing using guitars and tambourines and dance, albeit only swaying, to the tune of the burdah. (As the video shows below).

baboonatrumis

This sort of twisted idea of spirituality is the very examples which are often used as the definition of Sufism by those who are against the traditionally held teachings of the sufis, or people of tazkiyah for more of a better word. In essence, this is what sufism, or spiritualism as it is referred to nowadays, is to the like of these people, nothing more. With no applicability or practicality to lives in the 21st century; If applied correctly Tassawuff can be the greatest anti-depressant drug for people by connecting them back with God. For many, like the folks at Rumi’s cave, Sufism is only a rouse used to relax and celebrate almost all the non-islamic practices like women singing, men dancing among the room full of women. In all actuality these are a group of people who are looking for opportunities to do everything under the sky and get away with it under the cover of sufism, or islamic “spiritualiy”. In other words ‘halalify’, to coin a new word, their haram actions and intentions. It is people like these who have literally suffocated the life out of authentic spirituality in Islam. Many people now only see it as a class of sing-along poetry sessions replete with drinking mint tea served in eastern style tea cups whilst reclining on comfortable far-eastern style cushions made from Chinese duck feathers! A ceremony to celebrate the peace, love and harmony of all things high, chuckle.

In the minds of the folks at Rumi’s cave there is a complete alienation of the concepts of struggle and sacrifice of the self, to endure the trials and misfortunes along with others, to the idea of spiritualism they understand as. The afromentioned values of authentic spirituality are an integral part whole ethos of Tazkiyah. The awliyah were at the for front of seeking the welfare of people in this world and the next. They were not idly sitting by singing love songs, beating drums and plucking flowers to weave in their hair. Nor were they a group of people care free, living life to the full, listening to psychedelic music, embraced in sexual revolution, to explore altered states of consciousness. The real Rumi (ra) and what he stood to represent was not a man nor a group of people who were tying to establish a sophisticated; currently fashionable; fully up-to-date sense of identity which the insolent fools are Rumi’s cave are trying to promote without, for the time being, much success.

There have always been a fringe group of people in all cultures and religions and the baboons at Rumi’s cave are no different. What is alarming to note, is the rate at which they are winning admirers. The popularity of these neo-cons, new-age type of people who like to present a restriction-free, and a pluralist version of Islam is more popular than ever before. Rumi’s Cave is only a new line of the shaytanic brand which is out there on the high street (no pun intended). The devil is always fashioning his tricks under new guises and appearances. The most dangerous ones out of all are the trappings which are apparently clothed in the looks and feel of religiosity; in the clothes of Juniad Bagdadi and Mawlani Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (ra’nhum) as it is the case literally in this example. Muslims who are sincerely seeking to find ways to connect with Allah and mend their relationships which have been lost to the ramblings and pit holes of life should avoid at all cost the minions at Rumi’s cave. They are the people who have completely redefined egotistically what is means to follow the path of the righteous people; to Sing, dance, drink and praise the lord! – Astagfirullah!

May Allah guide people to the true way of the righteous people and save us from destruction at the hands of our own doing. Amin.

Islam is in the spotlight now more than ever before and this has caused people to question the faith itself and none more so than the new-age modernists muslims, largely from the convert western countries who are hell-bent on reforming Islam and its traditional values. This blog is a small space in the vastness of the internet where the fight to preserve, uphold and dignify the traditional inherent human values, are proactively argued against the onslaught of modernist propaganda and hate. Covering topics from current affairs to life-enriching inspirations, though to the traditional teachings of the pious and the awliyah of the past and the present. alot of assumptions made in this article. have you spent any amount of time speaking to these people and understanding what and why they are doing this?

As-Selamun aleykum,

Dear Brothers,

As I’m not living in London I can’t “go and see for myself”, and I didn’t watch the video, so I can’t really comment on what is going on there.

Yes, I agree with you that using the Respected Scholar Rumi’s name together with “cave” implies some things which may be undesirable.

But to call those involved “baboons” is disrespectful and should be reconsidered. If they ARE Muslims, then speaking to them kindly, and discussing your thoughts may be more fruitful. If they are doing this for the purpose of remembering Allah (God), then that is better than them not doing anything to remember Him or even (May Allah protect), working against religious belief.

Also considering the recent events and current political situation in Turkey (which I’m sure you have links with), the use of both the word “cave” and “baboons” is questionable.

I agree with aj and second their question. Remember, these days we (Muslims) need to focus on our common points and avoid “conflict” and “encampment”.

Best wishes, Trust in Allah

the poster of this article has hit the nail on the head ma sha Allah. i have noticed other issues like sisters wearing hijab but with skin tight clothes practically showing their assets.

Like

Walicum asalam, for a start i do not have links with the Turkish government. Secondly, the use of baboons here is to show the unethical practices of the people there; the rebellious and cheeky nature o the animal. Thirdly, What we should divert our attention is to the free mixing, singing and dancing going on in the video. Clearly something which is at odds with the Quranic teachings. We should instead take measures to stop this in a civilized way and make others aware of unislamic haram practices which are falsely done under the glorious name of Islam. Instead of missing the point of the article and focusing on the unimportant and insignificant aspects.

As-Selamun aleykum my respected elder brother,

When I said Turkey, I didn’t mean the Government. Anyway, let’s not get involved in that argument.
I want to ask another question: Do those attending these “sessions” claim that they are representing “Islam” and telling people that their way is the only way to practice Islam? If not, my points are valid.
What is the difference between what these people are doing and what the Alevis do in their “Cemevi”? They call that worship, women and men “dance” together (on foot, in a circle, in front of everyone), and people say that “Alevilik” is “part of Islam”, something which I don’t agree with. Oh well…

Can the author of this article please tell me where and when the organisers have set up Rumis Cave to be a centre for the study or practice of sufism? Rumi is a respected poet worldwide, he does not belong to anyone and a study of his works will show that he loved using music and dance to reach spiritual states. Nothing that is done inside Rumis Cave would be considered as straying away from his teachings. As he himself said:

“Come, come, whoever you are. Wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving. It doesn’t matter. Ours is not a caravan of despair. come, even if you have broken your vows a thousand times. Come, yet again , come , come.”

Rumis Cave is there for the disenfranchised young Muslim who has been ostracised by the local mullah at the mosque. The same mosque where the Imam does not speak English and has no understanding of the needs of the non-Asian or Arab Muslim. Its a retreat for those Muslims who are returning back to their deen but have nowhere else to go to be with like minded people who will help each other on the path. Its a stop gap, a stepping stone and should be seen as such. The venue is small, but the fact it is regularly packed proves that there is a need for a third space like this.

The use of the term baboon is not only offensive but it is also racist. The owner is a black man and many who go there are also black. Are you so ignorant to not know that it is a racist term when used in the wrong way?

I have been to Rumis many times and not once have I seen dancing or even swaying. Theres simply no space for that! ” Many people now only see it as a class of sing-along poetry sessions replete with drinking mint tea served in eastern style tea cups whilst reclining on comfortable far-eastern style cushions made from Chinese duck feathers!” And what is so wrong with that? Is there no space for rest and relaxation in Islam?

There are so many incorrect assumptions and allegations made in your article, I would not know where to end. So I will end right here.

I pray you take this foolish article down and seek forgiveness from all of the people you have offended, especially the owner Shaykh Babikr Ahmed.

Wa’alaicum asalaam brother.

Although your comments are largely directed towards the poster nonetheless I felt compelled to respond. I feel you have missed the goal post completely and taken the point of the article out of context and meaning.

Firstly your statement that rumi does not “belong to anyone and used music and dance to lead people”, is exactly as the poster himself said “insulting, offensive” and degrading to the waliullah. How dare you say he used music and dance to guide people? This is an accusation and slander on the great man of Allah, a gnosis and arifbillah. I hope you seek immediate forgiveness and “remove this foolish..” comment. You should think carefully before you write words against people especially the friends of Allah. The flimsy attempt you tried at defending the actions of the people in the video by a quote is shocking. If the quote you use of the great man are indeed true for we cannot know the reality . Then it is completely separate to wp

If you’re going to quote someone, at least make your quote accurate! Where in my comment did I say this: “belong to anyone and used music and dance to lead people”

Goodness grief, my original comment is right there in black and white.

This is what you said, “Rumi is a respected poet worldwide, he does not belong to anyone and a study of his works will show that he loved using music and dance to reach spiritual states. Nothing that is done inside Rumis Cave would be considered as straying away from his teachings”. So his teachings were music and dance? What’s so different to what I said? Besides, my point still stands. A piece of advise to you is do not forcibly put words in the mouth of a man who cannot defend himself! Your abysmal attempt to colour this article as racism is silly at best. I found this article was not in the least targeted towards the owner or anyone as such. It was a piece on the pitiful actions of a lost few souls seeking to find cure by drinking poison as it were. The use of baboon here is exemplary.. Mindless dance to the whims of the ego. What next? …the twerking craze of Miley Cyrus induced during a session of Mawlana Rumi’s supposed “music and dance…” teachings? May Allah forgive! Woe onto the one who takes his ego as his mawla, his master and God. Lastly you have accused the poster of racism by alluding to the use of baboons. Yet have failed to give concrete evidence this is what is ment here. You even said “Are you so ignorant to not know that it is a racist term when used in the wrong way?” how do you know he used this term in a wrong way? Have you cut open his heart and examined it under a microscope? Remember the prophetic Hadith if a brother has done something wrong then you should find 70 excuses for him… (paraphrased) So have good opinion of others. Now I know your thinking, well what about the people in the video? I’m afraid that tact won’t work here. In the video people are openly violating several Islamic injunctions not to mention the main one which is of unnecessary free-mixing. So the command of enjoying good and forbidding evil is taken up in this case done in the most appropriate way as the brother has done.

Wow – thanks for reminding me how narrow-minded and self-righteous some Muslims can be Farid. Thank God there are people like those at Rumi’s cave, or I’d have no Muslim friends to hang out with.

May Allah expand your mind and your breast and give us all good manners and respect towards each other.

“Those who show mercy, the All-Merciful – Blessed and Exalted is He! – will show mercy to them. Show mercy to those in the earth and those who are in the heaven will show mercy to you.”
This famous and beautiful hadith is traditionally the very first learnt with its isnad when someone engages in serious hadith studies.

i have emailed Rumis cave people and i await their response to clarify the situation. For the time being the video is abhorrent and should be shunned by all as grossly misrepresenting the ways of Rumi or any of the other great people of Islam.

You are a ignorant imbecile! How you you even have the audacity to compare the female companions of the great one (salatul’lahi’aliy’was salamu’aliy) with the little, timid and disgusting women in the video? FYI: the narration about women singing on that occasion is weak and many have also said it was done in a low and separate section to the men. It was not free-mixed, free-for-all style of way like the video. How can you even begin to think anything like this happened at those blessed times, singing with guitars and what not, dancing men and women together? If this is what the people are wanting why not simply do what they have been doing in their previous lives as non Muslims, go to a club. This is the pathetic state of liberals within this community. To much TV and Internet has caused their minds to become mush and sluch like the rest!

Gosh – we’re a bit free with the insults in these comments! We’re all doing the best we can in a difficult world, and not everyone’s lives are as simple as yours might be. You don’t know what anyone’s situation is, what anyone’s intention is, what anyone’s trials in this world are or how Allah will judge them or you. May He have mercy on us all.

Some people want to “own” or have a monopoly on God, saying “no one will be admitted to His mercy unless they do as we say,” thus alienating anyone who can’t or doesn’t comply with the strict moral code they consider to be necessary. But God’s mercy encompasses everything and everyone, and ‘ulema who emphasise God’s mercy and inclusiveness are correct to do so. Pushing people away from the beauty of Islam with narrow-minded interpretations comes from self-righteous and ego. It is an impulse we have seen played out over and over in history, where one group proclaims that only they have the truth and the ticket to paradise and everyone else is damned – it gives them the glow of feeling superior to everyone else, but it is only their nafs and it is only a devisive impulse. Of course it is important to forbid evil and enjoin what is right, but this doesn’t mean clobbering someone over the head with insults and threats because they don’t wear their hijab right. It applies just as much to helping the poor, the wretched and those gone astray, which often means getting down to their level, and starting from there. It also applies to taking care of animals and the environment.
Abu Huraira (Radi-Allahu ‘anhu) narrated the following hadith:
Allah’s Apostle (Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, “A prostitute was
forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing
that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying
it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, Allah forgave
her because of that.”

No I am not saying I “own” people only that some people need to learn the Islam which the pious people of the past had, transmitted and lived by. None of the nonsense we have of today. These fitnas are created by new converts mostly who think they know how to practice and live by Islam better than others. O the irony…!

very well written article. baboon is no doubt a fitting term. i know first hand many people who attend rumis cave, and it is a place that has little to do with real and authentic Islam. rumis cave is a place of music, dance, singing, free mixing and the spread of un-Islamic beliefs. Its more like a youth club, where people come to hear talks on love and spirituality, but little in the way of gaining knowledge of real Islam, such as fiqh, hadith or aqeedah.

the main shaykh there is a follower and student of shaykh nazim, the same shaykh nazim who on youtube claimed that he he has reached such a high level his bad deeds are no longer recorded. Therefore we do not find the deviancy of such people surprising.

rumis cave seems to be a symptom of a much larger problem. youth come their not be judged or held accountable for their bad deeds, not to be told by the “wahhabis” that what they are doing is haraam. But rather to be in a non-judgmental environment where they can essentially do as they please and claim it is Islamic, or at the very least spiritual.

the deen of Islam necessitates we enjoin what is right and forbid what is evil. the rumis cavers seem to be the kind that follow the lines “you can’t judge me” or “i may not pray or wear a hijab, but i have a clean soul because i do a bit of charity work”.

.the long term effects of such a perversion of our religion is in the long-term many people who attend such places eventually leave Islam knowingly or unknowingly. they will either consciously choose to leave the faith because they believe more in “spirituality” than Islam and that all religions are true, so why believe one supreme truth. Conversely they will inadvertently leave Islam by the evident kufr preached at the cave such as one can become one with Allah (swt) through dhikr, please see abdul latif finch’s video on “annihilation in God”-audhubillah.

may Allah (swt) save us from such evil.

i am sory, but the person who wrote this article doesn’t have any inteligence. a typical najdi, judgeing people he doesn’t knew. rumis cave is a place for lost youth. a place for them to enjoy spirituality, creativity, love. rumis cave gives a place to people who are lost.
and as for u saying their singing and dancing is haraam! haraam! their are many interpretations of Islam, who are u to say which is the right one. we have ours and our shaykh babikir sees nothing wrong with what we do. he has knowledge passed down from shaykh to shaykh going back to Abu Bakr ra u should know. so who r u guys to judge real shaykhs and real students of knowledge?
we are just an inocent group of peoples, loving everyone, no matter who u are, hindu, christian, jew, we are all humanity. and rumis cave is open for all peoples to come together and unite for love. u join us, or leave us alone, simple.

This is a complete and utter disgrace disgrace to Islam, how can these actions be justified . free mixing and Music is haraam, and then to label it as Islam is terrible .

It is narrated by Anas bin Malik who said that the prophet (saw) said “Whoever listens to a female singer, molten lead will he poured into his ears on the day of judgement.” Reported by Abdullah ibn Mubarak.
It is actions like these which draw so many weak minded people to Sufism, you can get away with anything by saying it is spirituality and Sufism.

May Allaah (SWT) guide them insha’Allah.

I wonder if Shaykh Babhikir approves of these activities because they are inherently right, or because he fears that if there isn’t a place where “lost youths” can go but can still hold onto some sort of Islam, they would fall deeper and deeper…

Allaahu’l Musta’an! Allaah is the One whose help is sought. You don’t need to be a scholar of Islam to know there’s so much that is WRONG in that video in terms of going against the teachings of our pristine religion which doesn’t need all this superficial, jahil bogus to give us a spiritual uplift. This is totally at odds with the way of the earlier pious sufis.
Secondly Jalaluddin Rumi himself held a seriously false belief of Wahdatul Wujood (i.e. Allah and His creation are one being) along with many other issues, even though a lot of his work was quite eloquent and powerful.

Alhamdulillaah we have enough in the Qur’an and Prophetic traditions that suffices us against seeking knowledge, wisdom and spirituality in other foreign concepts/movements which clash against the fundamentals of our religion. This is one example of such a mishap. May Allaah guide the Ummah to the straight path-the path of the Prophet (peace be upon him), his sahabas and the early generation Muslims i.e. our righteous predecessors.

“And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous.”
(Qur’an Chapter 6 Verse 153)

“And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajirun (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhajirun) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.” (Qur’an Chapter 9 Verse 100)

It’s sad that you feel the need to attack these people. Their contribution to portraying the true loving nature of Islam is greater than any contribution you have made on this hateful site. Why can you not respect that this is their way of getting close to God? Since you’re such a great a fan of Mawlana Rumi you should know that it was he who said ‘There are as many paths to God as there are souls on earth’. We can never truly attain unity in the Ummah or peace on earth if we don’t stop shaming our fellow muslims for the way they choose to worship.

Al Salam aleikum,
It seem some like Arabia are feigning not to understand that it is not about “owning” Islam or being judgemental… It is sink about right and wrong according to Allah’s Sharia,
Like it or not our Prophet (pbh) never used music, singing nor dance.
So for you to even pretend it is ok to sing, use music, rap in a mixed audience where women do not wear Islamic hijab is hypocritical and you know it. You furthermore you attack a decent Muslim who tried to call you out on your misguided ways using kaffir arguments off “freedom of thought & actions” is nauseatingly.
You can do whatever you want Allah gave us the freedom to choose & act but let’s not deluded ourselves, you have chosen the slippery slopes.
The brother calling you out cares enough to tell you do and warn others, but ultimately Allah guides those He loves, and perhaps He will guide you too one day when you are onset with yourselves.
Personally I don’t care enough to call you out, I have seen many sad girls who hate hijab seeking these fringe groups, old unhappy spinsters May Allah have pity on them.
When they accept That Islam is perfect as practised by ahl el Sunnah Wal Jamaat, they will wear full appropriate hijab, they will understand that their voices are awarat that mixing with men needlessly is to be avoided, that marrying early and have many children is far far superior to their perpetual obsession with “career” and lowly financial gains (strangely they are invariably poor) that Allah will shower believing stay st home mothers with endless blessings in this world before the next. I feel nothing but potty for the women singing and playing instruments in this clip, sad & willing victims of shaytan. How they suffer.
Those of us wear full hijab staying at home with our families have peace of mind & tranqulity (sakinah) as well as wealth these poor girls can only dream off. Until they stop search for their happiness xbd fulfilment in kaffir ideologies and accept Islam completely unconditionally they will never get us total beauty, peace, joy in this world before the next.
Wal Salam aleikum.

This kind of intolerant expression illustrates a total lack of gnosis of the essence of Rumi’s teaching. Your words are a hollow drum. This has nothing to do with the true submission Islam invites to. How embarrassing! You seem blinded by the inability to see beyond the confines of Islam. Transcend your shari’a & beliefs to deeper levels of understanding rather than being stuck at the literal and appearance. Only then will you even understand the likes of Rumi and his meaning. Some of you here speak about the Quran and the Prophet (Sa) with such a low understanding. He also exhorted to seek knowledge even unto China – think about it. Any words that cause division is the result of ‘shirk’ – polytheism – giving existence to yourself and other beside God. Creating idols in your mind, heart and thoughts. The Prophet Muhammad does not invite to this! Real gnosis does not belong to muslims, it is the birthright of all human beings, of all creeds and all ways. Rumi’s invitation is universal and to all who desire to know themselves, no matter how many vows have been broken. Being self-righteous in constrictive rectitude has nothing to do with Islam or Rumi. If you choose to be a practicing muslim, go ahead but it is not the only way, only the way and structure you have chosen. And it is no guarantee against ignorance nor of understanding of the real meanings of the Quran, which has many layers and cannot be owned. Sincerely seek refuge from your nafs and seek guidance not rigidity. All ways lead to Him, there is no other than Him. He is me, I am no other than Him, but I am not Him. Only those whose hearts are truly in submission, see clearly. Salaam!
