‘The Law of Attraction’, from an Islamic point of view

Every now and then, i get emails, suggestions, and comments from people who present me with topics to write about, comment on, or simply to check something. A couple of days ago, someone forwarded me the ‘Secret’ film documentary, and asked if i would watch it and see what i thought of the concept. Which essentially talks about the idea of ‘The law of Attraction’. Briefly, for those who don’t know, The ‘laws of attraction’ is as follows (in its most crudest form).

The law of attraction is the name given to the belief that “like attracts like” and that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, one can bring about positive or negative results. For example, if a person opened an envelope expecting to see a bill, then according to the law of attraction, the envelope would “confirm” those thoughts and contain a bill when opened. A person who decided to instead expect a cheque might, under the same law, find a cheque instead of a bill

‘Like attracts to like’, is the key concept here. We live in a vibrational universe. All the matter that we see before us, our bodies, the trees, seas, the houses we live in, etc. Is actually, just empty space and not as solid as it seems to be. Science has already proven this to be the case. With 99.99 percent of research pointing towards this direction. All the things we assume to be solid, are actually only vibrating in and out. Phasing in and out of other dimensional existence. (trust me, although it sounds gibberish, its true.) it is an integral part of the ‘Quantum Physics Theory’. This is a leading field of knowledge within the scientific community, now being researched more vigorously than ever before.

Now, ‘the laws of attraction’ says, if we live in a vibrational universe, and our own bodies are constantly sending out vibrations into the universe we can engage with it, in order to live a happier and healthier life. To do this, human’s have to learn how to tune into their thoughts. The way to manifest with one’s intention is to create a visualization of what you desire in your mind. Creating a feeling that you already have that product/house/money etc. So, if you want your dream house, you simply create an image of it in your mind and then experience living in it. As if you already have it. You imagine all the joy, the satisfaction and the pleasures of living in it. The more you let your self experience this, the more you will attract that reality to you. Because, you will become a vibrational match for that existence. The good emotions have a high frequency, and the bad emotions a low-frequency. This is why, you feel down when in a bad mood or happy and elated in a good mood. The universe will shape itself around your vibration, and sooner or later your dream will manifest. In essence, things will fall into place, and eventually the result you want will happen. The power of our emotions and thoughts shaping our own future.
Now, whether you believe it or not, it’s up to you. The fact of the matter is, from an Islāmic point of view, the laws of attraction, and the theory behind it has strong resemblance to the science of Tassawuff, salahtul istikharah and Islāmic teachings in general. The similarities are blindingly obvious! For instance, the first idea that,

‘We live in a vibrational universe, and that everything around us is not solid but in fact empty space. Coming in and out of existence from another dimension’.

Islamically, we know that the attribute of Allah, ‘Al Kaliq’ (the creator) does not mean he created the universe and then he became known as ‘Al kaliq’. Or, that, he attained the quality of being ‘Al Kaliq’ once he had created the universe. But, in actuality ‘Al kaliq’ means; ‘the one who constantly creates and brings into existence’. Every second of our existence Allah is constantly creating, or, ‘bringing into existence’ our bodies, the environment around us, and all the ‘matter’ we know. It is only now the scientific community in the fields of Quantum Physics, and the ‘law of attraction’ are beginning to entertain this idea. We are not solid matter, but empty space, constantly vibrating coming in and out of existence. The law of attraction says

‘creation is always happening’.

Secondly, i find it amazing to see how the concept of ‘the laws of attraction’ ties in nicely with the concept of salahtul istikharah. (The prayer of help). It is as if, the prophet (sallahualihiwasalam) taught us ‘the laws of attraction 14 and a half centuries ago. We know salahtul istikharah is a prayer done when a believer wishes to embark on an idea, or do something. The prophet (sallahualihiwasalam) taught us, to do this special prayer and then relay on Allah. If the thing you wish is good for you, it will come to you. Things will fall into place and eventually, your aspiration, or dream will become reality. This is what ‘the law of attraction’ basically teaches. – Focus on your intention of want, use your emotions to experience it, and this will help you to attract that vibrational pull towards you. Things will fall into place and the universe will shape itself towards your positive vibrational pull.

Thirdly, in the science of Tassawuff, we are taught how to negate the bad thoughts and only entertain the positive thoughts. which will enable us to lead a more prosperous life, free from the satanic tempting and whispers. The underlying theme which runs through ‘the laws of attraction’, touches on it as well. Using our positive thoughts as fuel to power our engines of emotions and freeing the mind from negative thoughts. For instance, if some wakes up thinking he will be late for work. He will actually be late for work. If he changes his mind and thinks he will not be late focusing on the thought, then he wont be late. The thoughts actually have the power to change this. It’s that straight forward. Thoughts become things. If you think about something over and over again, it will become reality. Murakabah (meditation) teaches us, to think over and over about Allah, and that, we are in his presence. So, eventually we live a life with the presence of Allah constantly in our minds.

Fourthly, as a moral and Islāmic teaching we know Allah (swt) says,

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor];

– Al Quran (14:7)
Again this concept runs through ‘the laws of attraction’. It says, for your day to start on a positive mood, and for that (thought) to actualize into reality. You must begin your day by being grateful for all the things you have. If you do this, the universe will reciprocate. As the vibrational frequency will be strong enough to multiply this ‘good mood’ for you, throughout your day. Many people wake up feeling tired, and distraught. With worries and concerns on their minds. This then propels them to have a bad day. Where as if someone wakes up being grateful for having another day to live, to eat, drink, and enjoy family. His day will turn out to be good and happy. Even if he has no love in his life, no family, no friends or support. He will end up receiving love.

Ultimately, whatever these ‘new-age theories’ are coming out with. There are strong similarities to the truth of Islam which can be seen within the fabric of these ideas. Science and most of the other things which people have taken up as the religions’ of our times. Slowly but surely, are in the end, pointing towards one thing. The divinely revealed laws and religion of Islam. Its teachings and morals, its ethics and standards.

‘And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]’. Al Quran (14:7)

Islam is in the spotlight now more than ever before and this has caused people to question the faith itself and none more so than the new-age modernists muslims, largely from the convert western countries who are hell-bent on reforming Islam and its traditional values. This blog is a small space in the vastness of the internet where the fight to preserve, uphold and dignify the traditional inherent human values, are proactively argued against the onslaught of modernist propaganda and hate. Covering topics from current affairs to life-enriching inspirations, though to the traditional teachings of the pious and the awliyah of the past and the present. You clear all my doubts and worries.
I was thinking the same. The concept is same. All we have to do is be in faith and seek guidance from Allah. And be grateful to Allah and trust him because he loves us 70 times more than our mother.so being positive is also matches here. Some people are just extremist. Do never criticise any teaching without practical and logical proofs. And never compromise Islam 🙂

سلام ماشاءالله You cleared my doubts which someone else raised up.
Being grateful to Allah azzawajal
Seeking guidance from him
Trust him (being/expecting positive)
Never concentrate on negative/evil thoughts which comes from shayatan.
That’s what Islam told us.
“The secret” people have explained in their theory. I wish they understand our blessed sacred religion and get revert :))) #invitetoislam 🙂 You deserve a follow.

I became interested in the laws of attraction about a year ago and have been amazed by it since. Especially the similarity between it and Islam. Listening to Napoleon Hills ‘Think and Grow Rich’ I thought this sounds a lot like Islam then it came as a shock when the 5th Chapter is a concise biography of the Prophet he’s says he (saw) was a living example of all the principles. You’ve pointed out some similarities but there are many more.

Hello,

I know this is an old post, but I hope someone will reply.

I’m a big believer in the law of attraction. But also lately, I’ve been feeling called to Islam.

I’ve seen the LOA work in my life. My question is, if these laws come directly from Islam, why can people who are not Muslim seem to apply them? Perhaps Allah wishes that by success coming to them, they will turn to the one who gave it to them? I don’t know.

I am glad that the law of attraction is reflected in Islam. But what I’m trying to figure out is, is it reflected in Islam because the LOA is a law independent of God, but Muslims figured it out, or that it is from Allah, through the religion of Islam, that all blessings come, and some people outside of the religion have also figured this out?

I’d greatly appreciate any reply.

Hello Brandon,

I would gladly say the concepts of the Law of Attraction (LOA) is deeply embedded within the teachings of Islam because it is not necessarily a religion per say but a complete way of life. Which means it shows a person how to be rich both in the spiritual and material/physical sense and therefore it promotes the idea do good on to others and it will have a positive impact on you. This means it carries with it a positive power of transformational healing. The LOA is essentially from religion of Islam as it was the original message of all the prophets of Allah, may Allah’s peace be on them all. The reason people feel LOA outside of Islam I.E those, as you say, ‘that are not Muslims’ is because of the mercy of Allah. In our scriptures we know Allah said he has 100 parts to his mercy and out of the 100 parts he sent 1 of these parts to creation I.E this world. This one part of the mercy of Allah encompasses all of creation from the mother who shows love and compassion to her baby to the new born animal in the wilderness from its mother. The rest of the 99 parts of Allah’s mercy will be shown to creation on the day of judgement. So anyone who shows positive compassion on others I. E LOA, this compassion is automatically reciprocated back hence people feel good when they good a good deed. Fundamentally the reason for this is because of the mercy of Allah is behind all this which covers all other mercy shown on earth he shows mercy and good will on them. Later down the centuries spiritualists outside religion who prefer not to follow any coined the idea of LOA as they knew any good positive thoughts they harboured will be reciprocated to them through positive vibes from the universal positive power, in other words, from the mercy of Allah.

Ah, Allah is indeed merciful, because you replied to me on such an old post.

I understand your response. I’ve noticed that for those non-Muslims, that though they benefit by this mercy, they have trouble finding real peace.

I was a little discouraged initially because I’ve read on other sites about suffering and being tested for heaven. But I indeed believe that things go much better for us when we’re positive and grateful for what we have.

I have one more question, which I hope you will answer or point me to somewhere I can get this answer. I am a life coach. Meaning, I help people to be successful, actually to apply this very law of attraction, and to find their purpose in life. If I were to become Muslim, would such a job still be acceptable? Is it acceptable to “help” non-Muslims? I’ve been truly blessed in the work that I do.

Thank you again for your wonderful comment, and also for this blog.

Firstly, of course you can still continue working in your line of work passionately. In fact, all forms of work (other than haram work I. E drug dealing, alcohol prostitution etc), is earning a halal (legal) living which is considered worship in the sight of Allah if one has the right intention. Secondly, to address your concern on the nature of test. I do not for one second negate the idea of tests and tribulation in life this is a part of life which has to be taken into account. Allah has designed it this why as part of earning his eternal pleasure in paradise. A believer is expected to navigate himself from all that is made haram and live a halal life. Why all the tests and hardships in life I hear you say? This is because this world is an examination room and in any examination there are very difficult questions, no so difficult and the easy ones. Now it is upto the one under examination to put the correct answers on his exam paper of life or either to choose to completely ignore the exam and idly sit by doodling on his paper. However, in all that time the examiner will not intervene even once on how the person is doing his exam only on the results day will the success or failure of the tests will become apparent to the one who sat the exam. Similarly is the case with Allah, this life is a test and we have the freedom of will either to live by Allah’s laws (religion) or choose to ignore it. In all that time Allah will never intervene in our choices we make. The day of judgement is where our answers we chose to put down on our exam paper of life will be clear as day. It is also on that day when Allah’s ultimate justice will be given out so much so if a ram has been unjustly killed by another ram who had tusks by which it killed the other ram that did not, Allah will give the less advantageous one complete justice to it.

Thank you very much. I understand what you mean about tests, and I accept that. 🙂 But it is good to know there is mercy as well, and not only trials. That was my only point.

السلام عليكم OUMI.

I’ve been Muslim for almost two months now الحمد لله, partly due to this post. Before I had converted, I had seen the law of attraction active in my life, so it was important to me that Islam also reflected this “law” in some way.

The way I understand it right now, which is of course just my opinion… is that we have to change our own beliefs about what is possible in our lives. One of the prerequisites for a du’a being answered is that we believe it will be answered, which is very similar to the law of attraction.

If you don’t believe your du’a is answered, and fear it won’t be answered, then it’s like not trusting in Allah (سبحانه وتعالى). For those who trust, He says (interpretation):

And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent. (Surah at-Talaq, 65:3)

So I see our part as believing that Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) will take care of us, and give us either our desire or something better, because it says in the Quran (interpretation):

But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not. (Surah al-Baqara, 2:216)

So that’s how I see the law of attraction. We believe, remain grateful, and trust in Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) to provide for us and for our needs.

Like I said this is only my opinion as a recent revert, but I hope it can be useful إن شاء الله.

Salaams Sheikh Nazim,
I was wondering if you would be able to show more examples from the Qur’an and Sunnah encouraging us to match vibrations to what we want? All my life I thought it was just about saying du’a and moving forward, but I never knew anything about matching vibrations.
I have tried it and have already seen suggestions of it working, and many different fields of endeavors have different forms of encouraging people to match vibrations to what they want. It would really calm my heart, though, to have something from the Qur’an or Sunnah that can be used to support this concept specifically.
Jazakallah khayr!

bro all what I simply understand about LOA is two things, which are thought and believe.
how to use them in Islam:
#thought is to ask Allah what you need by praying , remember Allah said u should request me and I will answer u.
and believe
is to believe that Allah will give u what’s u request.

I really love this post. I began actively using LOA to change my life since January 2016 and I can say today I have grown into an amazing human being. Something always kept bugging me that maybe i was sinning by actively using LOA to bring things into my life though another part of me kept being extremely calm cause it just felt right. I just began researching ISLAM and LOA and i must say your post is marvelous! Thank you.

I have to agree with your assertion. The Islam has taught this concept for centuries and yet Muslims are not looking it up in the Quran. The concept, law of attraction, is mentioned in the Quran in one form or another and it is directly related to our thoughts, actions and the manifesting results.

Thank you for the clarification. But what is really needed is for this truth, to be taught from the Minbar. The reason so many ” New Age ” philosophies carry so much weight with the masses, is because the truth that they purport to bring, which is already encapsulated in the Quran, Bible and Torah, is presented ‘ metaphorically ‘ or ‘symbolically.’
The Law of Attraction IS in the Bible , Quran and Torah. IF one knows how to read it or DECIPHER it. Just make the truth plain for the people.
