For the past 10 years or so, the Muslim directory, widely circulated within the Muslim communities in UK needs no introduction. From its humble beginnings it has now become the emblem of the success of British Muslim businesses. Essentially, the directory deals with Muslim businesses and services which are available across the length and breath of the country. When it first came out I remember it as being the corner-stone for leading the way with more initiatives that would soon follow from within the Muslim community. Over the next ten years we then began to see the explosion of Muslim magazines, newsletters and the ilk, fill the plethora of the growing Muslim lifestyle market.
However turning to a darker side there is a sinister parallel ideology running along with that of the more credible and commendable actions of the directory.
In the 2012/2013 issue of the Muslim directory, there is a theme which the editors choose to include and run throughout the edition. That is the continuing events unfolding in Syria. Within the ‘did you know‘ sections of the pages. The reader is dressed to the life of an average individual living in Syria. The continual sufferings currently plaguing the county, the hunger, the pain, the sufferings etc. We, as the readers are fed to the idea of the inhuman (and rightly so) actions Bashr Al Assad. – The current president of Syria. Who is using unjust brutal force to suppress the uprising against him. That began in February 2011.
From the first page to the last, a series of chronological events surrounding Syria, its historical significance and the place it has in Islam, is enlisted in the directory.
In order to prepare the reader and to shed light on the hereditary monarchy of Syria. The editors of the Muslim directory draw on the historical events which in the eyes of many mislead and astray people is the cause and reason for ‘father-to-son’ monarchy establishment in Syria.
The story of Syyiduna Ali (ra) and Syyiduna Muwawiyyah (ra) is used as a definitive source for the monarchy establishment. As controversial and hotly debated topic it is. The editors try to draw a parallel line between the events back then, with that of the current situation in Syria today.
Dangerously, the columnist on page 368 has the audacity to suggest the cause for a monarchy establishment prevalent in Syria today was the result of the actions of one of the great companion of the prophet (saw). -SYYIDUNA MUWAWIYYAH (ra).
That, it was his call to make his son, Yazid become the successor to the throne. Therefore establishing the idea of a monarchy rule in the Muslim lands! In simple words saying, the mass injustice and the ‘kingship rule’ in Muslim lands, namely Syria is the fault of Syyiduna Muwawiyyah (ra). Secondly, the columnist suggests that it was Muwawiyyah (ra) who abolished the idea of a Khalifat based on religious qualification. Astagfirullah!
This suggestion, or even the idea/the thought is blasphemous in an of it’s self. Not to mention the greater disrespect and sin for publishing this idea in a popular ‘Muslim directory’. Where the infectious idea will be consumed by the millions of Muslims who read and use this directory.
Now Syyiduna Muwawiyah (ra) is a relative of the prophet (saw), a brother-in-law through marriage of Hafsa (ra) the sister of Syyiduna Muwawiyyah. He (Muwawiyah ra) is the son of Syyiduna Abu Sufyyian and Hind (ra). With that in mind, the Prophet (saw) was the son-in-law of Syyiduna Abu Sufyyian, in that the prophet (saw) was married to the daughter of Abu Suyyian – Hafsa (ra). To accuse the great companion of being the cause of injustice and upheaval is to indirectly also accuse the prophet (saw), and to attack his blessed family! These sorts of actions are nothing less than of being tremendously blasphemous! It is the sects which vehemently oppose the companions and the rightly guided kulafah, who talk in such manner and these ugly ideas are prevalent within their circles!
We as petty Muslims have no right what-so-ever to make any comments on the situations and events backs then. We cannot even say who was right and who was wrong. – (In the war between Ali (ra) & Muwawiyyah (ra).
– We cannot even compare ourselves to the dust below the hoofs of the horses of Muwawiyah (ra).
– There were great saints of Islam like Syyiduna Abdul Qadir Jilani (ra) who dared to speak of anything from that era & incident. He once famously said ‘I do not even think I am worthy to be compared to the dust which stuck under the hoofs of the horses of Imam Muwawiyyah (ra)’. When asked about the status of the great companion.
– Imam Abu hanifah also made similar remarks when asked about the incident between the two companions.
‘if Allah (swt) asks you this question of ‘who was right and who was wrong on the battle between Ali (ra) and Muwawiyyah (ra). I will answer on your behalf!’ was his reply to a question asked by someone.
In other words, he was saying, we should be preoccupying ourselves with our own deeds and actions. How we will die and what will happen to us in the hereafter. We will not be asked about them or anyone for that matter in our graves.
We should not have the time or be concerned in issuing out judgements about an incident which took place almost 1300 years ago!
[Page 368 – (Below) where the outrageously blasphemous, and disrespectful comment is printed!]
To sum up, how can we as Muslims living almost 1200 years after the incident between the two illustrious companions dare to issue any judgements or even suggest what supposedly happened. We are living in a time where CCTV and cameras are recording almost every second of our lives. Yet, despite all these tangible evidences people are still unsure, for example, of what actually happened on September 11th. Despite the clear footage and samples of actual events recorded. People are still not sure what the fact is from fiction. Then how on GOD’s earth can we be sure what happened back then? When there was no cameras, no photos, no written reports. Just spoken words! Be able give definitive answers on the topic or be an ‘authority’ on the topic of the battle between Ali and Muwawiyyah (ra). There are bound to be things which are completely untrue in the ‘historical’ accounts of the incident. Things just cooked up from thin air and biased reporting done of what happened on that day.
Lastly, the editors of the Muslim Directory deleberately choose to let the dark, sinister, and disgusting idea flourish. The idea that, had Hafez Al Assad (the father of the current Syrian president, Bashr Al Assad) not taken the ‘supposed’ and ‘alleged’ actions of Muwawiyyah (ra) as examples and inspiration. – ‘Supposedly’ the handing over of the khalifate to yazid.
He (Hafez Al Assad) would not have handed the rule of Syria to Bashr Al Assad, his son. Whom in turn would have not come to power and done all these monstrous actions he is doing now.
– The murder, slaughter, rape, torture etc.
– To shun this evil idea and to clear the myth. Syyiduna Muwawiyah (ra) did NOT choose Yazid to succeed him to the ‘throne’. As the columnist suggests. After the death of the companion, Yazid forced his way into power.
The once held clean and praiseworthy work which the Muslim directory were and are doing. Has now been tarnished and forever blackened in my heart. It is my hope they (the editors of Muslim Directory) see the light in this and retract the statement which has been left to be printed. Where by letting it get distributed throughout the growing Muslim communities around the country.
